Umodu leads South Hills’ 30-9 win

Records mean nothing when South Hills High School plays Rosemead in the annual pre-league match up.

The Huskies (2-2) jumped out a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter and then struggled to hold on for a 30-9 win over the Panthers Friday night at Covina District Field.

The Panthers battled back, closing the gap to 14-9 before the Huskies pulled away for the win.

“We gave ‘em a run for their money,” Panthers coach Matt Koffler said. “Our kids played hard tonight and South Hills is always a good team.”

Jacob Shirley connected with wide receiver Ify Umodu for a pair of touchdowns in the first quarter.

Shirley was 8-for-15 for 184 yards in the first half and had several balls dropped.

“Early on we opened up and popped the score,” Huskies coach Steve Bogan said. “Then we dropped some balls and we kind of got out of rhythm. Those (Rosemead) kids just kept hammering. They make it difficult to get into a rhythm.”

The Panthers’ Matt Eddy caused a turnover on a punt return that led to a 37-yard field goal by Chris Cancino to make the score 14-3 at the half.

The Panthers pulled within five points, 14-9, when Matt Macias hit Greg Parham on a 79-yard touchdown play.

“It’s hard to score points on them,” Koffler said. “We were trying to run the ball and get their safety down low and he did and we got our play.”

The Huskies’ Isaac Ramirez blocked a punt for a safety and then they turned the ball over to Geoffrey Vaughns.

Vaughns had his second consecutive 100-plus yard rushing game. He carried 13 times for 105 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Huskies.

“We wanted to get the flow going,” Bogan said. “We thought we could run the ball and get it going.”

South Hills rolls to 62-0 rout of Northview

COVINA – South Hills High School bounced back from two losses in Orange County with a 62-0 win over Northview at Covina District Field on Friday night.

The Huskies, led by Geoffrey Vaughns, Jacob Shirley and a dominating defense, took control early and never looked back as they evened their season record at 2-2.

Vaughns rushed eight times for 107 yards and three touchdowns and caught three passes for 157 yards and two more scores.

“I’m usually a wide receiver,” Vaughns said. “But we have a lot of running backs hurt so I just stepped in to help the team out.”

Shirley, who had been limited to punting duty and long snapping on extra points, started his first game of the season at quarterback. He completed all eight of his passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns, two of them to wide receiver Ify Omodu.

“It’s good to be back out under center,” Shirley said. “We had the outside guys making big plays but I have to give it up to my line. I had all day, and then some, to throw. ”

The Huskies defense, led by Alec Griffin and John Malcolm, added to the scoring when Rayes Barrera picked up a fumble and took it back 8 yards for a touchdown on the Vikings’ (0-4) first possession of the second half.

“Our goal is try to find what our best combinations are,” Huskies coach Steve Bogan said. “Through nonleague we’re always looking and this year we had three quality kids playing that spot (quarterback). We just want to find what makes us the best.”
